Black Sun Empire and Virus Syndicate Drop Debut Album as Shadow League, ‘Cheat Code’

Neurofunk meets grime in Cheat Code, the debut album of Black Sun Empire and Virus Syndicate’s Shadow League project.

Neurofunk powerhouses Black Sun Empire and grime heavyweights Virus Syndicate have long been tearing up the European scene separately, but they created something special when they collaborated on “Caterpillar” back in 2016. Almost ten years later, they have collectively returned under a new alias, Shadow League, to deliver their debut album, Cheat Code, via Black Sun Empire’s label Blackout Music.

Cheat Code consists of nine no-frills tracks, but it’s grounded in the razor-sharp production skills for which both artists are known. Songs like “Break It,” “Chopping Block,” “The Purge” with Pythius, and “Catastrophic” have names that match the album’s dark and savage soundscapes. Cheat Code spans a range of genres, from neurofunk to grime to dubstep, and it’s filled with ferocious synths, unyielding percussion, and charged vocals.

“Welcome To The Jungle” is a meticulously engineered opener that engages listeners at the outset and sets the album’s subversive energy in motion. “Crumble,” “Chopping Block,” “Catastrophic,” “Rammo,” and “The Purge” with Pythius are technically complex neurofunk weapons, built from syncopated rhythms, aggressive basslines, and layered synths. Meanwhile, “Break It” and “Back Down” are ominous and atmospheric dubstep tracks while “Bus Driver” delivers classic and high grime energy.

The true power of Cheat Code lies in its masterful production, where every element is crafted with precision and purpose. Shadow League’s debut album not only demonstrates the individual expertise of Black Sun Empire and Virus Syndicate, but also the immense potential of their collaboration. With this album, Shadow League signals the start of a partnership that promises to continue pushing the boundaries of neurofunk, grime, and beyond.

Jaclyn Sersland

Jaclyn’s journey as a raver began in 2022, but her obsession with music dates back to her middle school days as an angsty emo kid. A firm believer in the emo to raver pipeline, she has found a strong sense of community in the rave scene united by a common ethos of PLUR and a shared love for heavy basslines. A longtime writer and now Master’s in Journalism student at Georgetown University, Jaclyn is passionate about using her voice to spotlight the EDM scene. In particular, she enjoys writing about drum and bass, the number 1 favorite genre of hers, although her music taste spans wide so you will catch her byline on many types of stories. Her favorite artists are Andromedik, Sub Focus, Dimension, GRiZ, Oliverse, Illenium, Grabbitz, Zedd, Basstripper, Subsonic, and more.
